SUCCESS STORIES

We are filled with gratitude on behalf of all the animals in need that Southern Ontario Animal Rescue was able to save because of the support of devoted individuals like you!

Dogs like James Bond, Elsa, Moe and Coco (read their stories below) now have safe, happy, loving lives because of the caring, compassionate and generous spirit of our supporters.

JAMES BOND
James Bond
The words of the shelter worker explain Bond's history:  "I honestly don't think I'll ever forget the day I met this sweetheart. I remember one of my coworkers asking me to come out and help with a dog that a man claimed to have found in a ditch on the side of the road.  The man smelled of liquor and had been acting quite nervous/uneasy when he had walked in.

"As I approached the car door, he pointed to the trunk while staring at me.  He fights the rusty trunk lid open and I start getting the urge to express my 2 cents on the whole charade, until I'm stopped in my tracks by a pair of the kindest, and most desperate eyes I've ever seen peering out from this trunk.

"As I rushed over with my co-worker to lift him out and see what this poor guy had been through, he sat up, looked at me and just kind of waited for a second. I bent down on my knees and all I said was 'It's ok, handsome, come on out'.  He jumped straight up and out of the trunk and came right over to meet us. "

Bond was then scheduled for euthanasia by shelter management as he was "too aggressive with other dogs" - he had been barking at them when he first arrived in the shelter.  Using what resources we had (completely bypassing the shelter worker, as we knew it would cost the worker their job if their supervisor found out), SOAR found a way to get Bond out of the shelter.

The day of his release from the shelter, he was rushed to our vet, as his wounds had been briefly washed out with water, but that was it.  No antiseptic or antibiotic had been given to him during his month-long stay at the shelter.  Our wonderful vet cleaned Bond's wounds properly (he told us that "black pus" seeped out when he removed the scabs!), neutered him, gave him his vaccinations and microchipped him.

Upon arriving at the kennel where he was to stay, the kennel owners cautioned me that someone had "broken his spirit" and it may not be as fixable as his wounds.

Bond was in our care for almost two years!  During that time, with weekly visits, training, and lots of love, he blossomed into the sweet, loving, caring and playful little man he is today.  He loves to give kisses and snuggle on the couch, and his tail wags a mile a minute! Bond was formally adopted on March 31, 2007.  He now lives and plays with his brother, Ricky, an intact male Bull Terrier, and Max, a Himalayan cat.

Without the commitment and generosity of supporters like you, Bond would be just a heart-breaking memory of a dog we couldn't save.

COCO

Coco

Coco's owner passed away but the surviving family didn't want her so dumped her at the same shelter we got Bond from.  This poor little dog was there at least 6 weeks before shelter workers were allowed to contact us!

When we arrived, she was in a run with all large dogs as her neighbours.  Coco was so matted, her own urine and feces had caused burns and open sores to develop on her hind end!

Thanks to our supporters, Coco now lives with a wonderful family and her "sister", Salsa.

ELSA
Elsa

Elsa was dumped at a local shelter, along with her pug-brother Rocky, when she was diagnosed with mammary tumors (breast cancer).  The shelter contacted us as they knew no one would want to adopt a senior dog with cancer.

Thanks to a very generous donation by one of our supporters, Elsa received the surgery she needed to remove the tumors -- which turned out to be benign!

Elsa and Rocky now live with a wonderful couple who spoil them and give them the love they so deserve!

 Dexter (Moe)
Dexter
A family break up left this sweet boy at the local shelter.  The only problem?  He was approximately 9 months old, no training and weighed over 100 lbs!

Again, terriffic supporters like you helped us to get this boy neutered, up to date on his shots and into a wonderful new home!

Looking ahead, we know there is still much more work to be done.

Southern Ontario Animal Rescue may be small but we are proud of the work we do and the fact that we accomplish our goals by remaining true to our mission: saving the lives of unwanted pets in need of food, medical treatment, and a caring touch and placing them in homes where they will be loved and nurtured.

ANY amount is always gratefully received; however, we can only give tax receipts for donations of $10.00 or more
